Collective Architects shared with us their proposal for the Uşak Intercity Bus Terminal Complex Architectural Design Competition which won the second prize. Their design aims to bring in a terminal building to the city, which is designed with a well topographic analysis of the competition site. Their approach also involves combining the space left from the terminal building with the recreational area. More images and architects’ description after the break.
Terminal buildings are meeting points with the cities they belong to. That’s why they have to be catchy with unique and symbolic values. The competition site is situated at the 10. km of Usak- Afyon road in east-west direction. The parcel at the north of the project site, parallel to the road should be confiscated and used for recreational purposes as provided by master plan. Any kind of construction should be prevented.
Our proposal is situated in east-west direction linearly and located close to the south border of the site in order to combine the space left from the terminal building with the recreational area. This approach makes it possible for the iconic shell which is the main theme of the design, to become an important part of the landscape and the building to be perceived form Afyon- Uşak road with the shell. In addition to the road, surrounding the site according to the master plan two separate service roads are designed for buses and the passengers.
12m of level difference at the project site provides the separation of arriving – departing terminals and the district terminal in the proposed linear design as defined in the competition contract. Terminal complex which is functionally separated in three parts by this leveling is also connected with each other visually and auditorily in order to achieve a total space.
At the west side of the competition site, at the 0.00 level, there is the departing terminal and its landings. At the middle, +6.00 level, there is the arriving terminal and its landings. At east side +12.00 level, there is the district terminal and administrative offices. Each terminal has its own cafe, ticket office, resting-waiting and shopping areas.
